Feltwest Australia Exhibits in England!

I have a beautiful friend named Susan Swain. She is brilliant at anything and everything she puts her hands on. She came to visit me a few months ago and shared some of her felt designs- AMAZING!!!! The colours and textures were just exquisite. I love art that makes you wonder 'how in the world did they do that!'.... And that is what her work is like.

Sculpture by the Sea - Cottesloe 2011

Once again Cottesloe Beach is the host to 'Sculture by the Sea'. Once again it did not disappoint. Over 60 local, interstate and international artists have transformed the beach into a visual feast. It is spectacular, with a perfect backdrop over the Indian Ocean. The event is running until the 22 March, 2011 so you will have to be quick if you want to see it. Here are a few of my favourites:

Self Watering Flower Pot

A few months ago I bought this adorable Tea Pot from my local Op Shop (Thrift Store) for $1. I loved it so much but don't drink Tea or Coffee so I decided to make it into a self watering flower pot.

If you have a cute pot that is in the back of your cupboard collecting dust, then try this....

Tutorial

What you need:

A pot - Tea pots are ideal so if you have excess water you can simply pour it out.
Spacers- I used old plastic thread reels. You could use anything that wont decompose which is around an inch high. (ie. rocks etc)
Mesh - I used some plastic mesh. I doubled it over to make the holes a little finer.
Plant - Any suitable plant of your choice.

Step 1: Place your spacers in the bottom of your pot.

Step 2: Place mesh on the spacers.

Step 3: Plant and water

And you're done. How easy is that!

The idea of self watering pots is for the roots to eventually go through the mesh and into the space area where water will be, allowing you to not have to water as much and just let the plant do the work.

This means you don't have to drill a hole in the bottom of your fav pot and it is as easy as pie to do!!!

Megan Gale to host Project Runway Australia

It has been announced that Megan Gale is to host Project Runway Australia series 3 in 2011. She will be taking over the role from Kristy Hinze who decided not to continue with the show after her recent marriage to Jim Clark. Kristy has said that she is going to focus on family and continuing her education (Degree in Marine Biology).

Not only has Megan signed on to be the new host but it has been reported that she will also be the executive producer of the show. (source)

The Daily Telegraph has also announce that designer Jayson Brunsdon may be overlooked as one of the judges to make room for Alex Perry. (click here for full report)

I could not be happier. I think both Alex and Megan have impeccable taste in fashion (lets hope that continues in the show). Project Runway is a brilliant production already but if these rumours are true, I believe this change-up will be the boost the shows ratings need!!!! Its all very exciting. I can't wait til it starts!

All this exciting news makes me sad that I can't apply this year. It is going to be fabulous!!!!!

Logies 2011 - Vote Amberley Lobo for best new female artist!!!!

I just ran into an old friend of mine- Amberley Lobo. She is the female host for ABC3. She is one of the nicest most genuine people you'll ever meet. She modelled for me a few years back and she is really missed in the fashion scene here in WA. She completely rocked the catwalk and the dress she wore of mine was seen by stylists and other fashionista's and went on to be photographed and showcased in: Box Magazine, newspapers, Fashion Exposed etc. And because she showcased it so well it was also selected to be in the Australian Fashion Design Awards nationally televised final. Thanks Amberley!!!

She is up for nomination for the Best New Female Artist for the Logies 2011. Please vote for her- CLICK HERE TO VOTE!

Project Runway Australia Season 3

The much anticipated TV show - Project Runway Australia, is coming back. There were so many disappointed fans when it was announced that there would not be a 2010 show (me included).

But good news all you Project Runway fans..... Season 3 is coming to Australia in 2011. Applications are now open. The closing date is Jan 4th so you will have to be quick. Click Here!

Sorry about the lack of posts recently. I have been really ill. It's been the worst time to be sick. I have missed some really great fashion events and have had to say cancel any clients I had. One event that I was so upset about missing was Curtins - Collective Threads Graduation show. I had scored seats in the media box but was too ill to make it. My good friend Rasha went and will send me her pics. So I will update once I get them.

Earlier in the year I saw these images by Tim Walker for Vogue Italia, March 2010. They blew me away!!!
For me, this photo shoot has produced some of the most magical images..... It is titled Lady Grey.....
From the styling to the location, it is just spectacular. Best of all look at the incredibly detailed garments and accessories. Wowzezzz!!! The time and skill that has gone into each look is exceptional, and the way that Tim has captured each look is breathtaking.

A=mc2 is the fusion of two kinetic creative's Amanda Murphy and Amy Clarke. Over the past three years, Amy and Amanda have been involved in a cutting edge garment research project, which investigates the chain of clothing production from fibre to fashion. I had the opportunity to work alongside them during 'A Touch of Wool III' fashion show. Their collection was titled 'Knot Knits'. They dyed their wool in the most spectacular shades of orange. The collection was stunning. These guys did so much work behind the scenes which made the show so fun to be involved in.

Beq Design hits Shanghai Fashion Week

Beq Design hits Shanghai Fashion Week as part of an exhibition titled 'Dune'.

Exhibition project manager Anna Farren (who is the head of fashion at Curtin's school of Fashion and design) chose one of my outfits from the 'A Touch of Wool III' runway show at Perth Fashion Festival last month, to take with her to Shanghai for the exhibition.

Other designers involved are: Aurelio Costarella, Ae'lkemi, Megan Salmon, Antipodium and United Constructions, are amongst the 45 WA designers to be part of 'Dune'.

I feel very honoured to have had been selected for this exhibition.

The garment that was chosen was this princess cut teal dress made from WA Superfine Wool with hand knitted jacket. I will post more about it soon.

Acid Dyes - How to Dye Wool - The Little Purple Dress

I recently had a collection in Perth's Fashion Festival - A Touch of Wool III fashion show. Naturally, the fibre I was working with was indeed wool... yay!!! It was better than just wool it was superfine wool. AMAZING to work with.

We received the wool in the natural tone. Not wanting to use this colour meant that I would need to dye the fabric. I chose Acid Milling Dyes because it is great for dyeing wool.

The little purple dress above was knitted via the amazing Shima Seiki (digital whole garment knitting machine) housed at the Department of Agriculture and Food WA, it uses such thin yarn and was knitted using WA superfine wool. The dyeing qualities were fabulous. The following instructions were used to dye this dress.

How to dye wool-
(Please note that all safety precautions need to be followed. Protective gear including - eye wear, gloves, masks, toe covered leather shoes, apron etc. Always, follow instructions from your supplier and use a well ventilated area.)

What you need-

1. Safety gear

2. 3 x 1 cup glass cups
3. Large Pot
4. Stirring spoon
5. Dye solution
6. White Vinegar

7. Table Salt

8. Water

Directions-

1. Fill 2 of the 3 glass cups with approx 1 cup of water each. This is because the dyes and chemicals need to be in liquid form. In the first glass of water add 1tsp of dye and stir (if you want a deeper colour just add more). Place 3tbsp of salt into the second glass of water and stir. Fill the last glass with white vinegar approx 100ml.

2. Put in approx 3L water into the large pot. The ratio for liquid is 30:1 so 30ml of liquid is needed for every gram of fabric weight. (however if you are dyeing light weight or small amounts the ratio may jump up to 50:1. Rule of thumb- if in doubt just use as much water as it takes to fully immerse the garment or fabric in).

3. Add the first glass of water with the dye solution in it to the large pot of water and stir.

4.Wet your wool with water, make sure that it is completely wet then add it to the dye bath and stir.

5. Put the dye bath over a low heat and gradually heat to simmering. This may take some time but be patient and don't let it boil. Also, stir regularly. This is to stop uneven dyeing.

6. Carefully, remove material and add the cup of vinegar and the second glass with the salt solution in it into the dye bath. Replace the material and stir, stir, stir.

7. Simmer until the dye bath is exhausted. This just means that the fabric has absorbed all the dye and the water is clear.

8. Rinse well... (I added a nice smelling fabric softener to the rinsing process to get rid of the vinegar smell).

Let your material dry and repeat the process if you want a deeper colour. This dress didn't need any more dyeing. The colour was perfect.

In 2009, Jess open my collection title Disrupted at Curtins Home Ground Fashion Show. She was great to work with. She has a really unique look which I love and she really knows how to rock the catwalk. She has a shy elegance about her that was reflective in the show.

Perth in Bloom!

If your planning a trip to Western Australia, I recommend coming during September-October.
Not only is it Fashion Week where Perth rolls out the red carpet in the most spectacular fashion, but it is also the time where WA comes to life with the most stunning array of wildflowers. It is truly majestic!
Western Australia has the most incredible Botanic Gardens. It is called Kings Park. The Botanic Garden is 17 hectares right in the heart of Perth overlooking the Swan River. It is unique from other Botanical Gardens around the world because it has maintained its focus on local flora. The extraordinary diversity of Western Australian wildflowers are found nowhere else on earth. It is magical!

Beyond Garment

Beyond Garment is an exhibition that is currently showing at the Western Australian Maritime Museum.

I really wanted to see this exhibition since it opened during Perth Fashion Festival but due to other fashion commitments I just wasn't able to go.

This past weekend there were 'FloorTalks' on dress and adornment by Dr Ann Schilo, Senior Lecturer, School of Design & Art, Curtin University and also Accessory or art? Aboriginal engagement with Western fashion accessories by Dr Christiane Keller, Research Associate, WA Museum. I went to check it out.

I found it to be a fresh take on 'Artwear' or anything within the fashion norm. It stretched the boundaries of the garment and it was inspiring to say the least.

This Exhibition is free and it is showing until 28 November 2010. I recommend that you pop down and be inspired.

Alyce and Graham Polak's Wedding - shoes and flowers!!!

As a Designer you only play a small role in the overall look. The styling can make or brake the design. Alyce Oksuz attention to detail was impeccable. She chose colours, flowers, hair and makeup that truly complemented the design.

I just loved the flowers. I thought they were beautiful. The bouquet of flowers above greeted the guests as they entered the chapel. They were truly magnificent, as too were the flowers held by the bridal party.

Alyce's hair and makeup were exceptional. It carried the same elegant look right through the jewellery and into the gown. Stunning!!!!

Her shoes were hottttt!!!! When she showed them to me I fell in love. (I will try to find out where she got them from!!!) They were open-toed with amazing diamante encrusted bows. Unfortunately, I didn't get a great picture of them so you will have to settle with the images below. Sorry!!!!

I can't wait to see pictures of the reception. I made the lower half of the dress easily detachable so Alyce could take it off and show those amazing shoes while she partied the night away.

Alyce looked stunning. And I am so happy that I was able to have played a small part in her special day!

Beq Design goes Bridal!!!

Alyce Oksuz asked me to design her Wedding Gown back in July 2009. One of her good friends Jacqui Brown from Fashion WA, introduced us. Jacqui Brown wore one of my gowns on the red carpet at StyleAID 2009. A picture of Jac wearing Beq Design on the red carpet was featured in Box Magazine under 'Who Wear What!'. So a big 'THANK YOU!!!!' shout out goes to Jacqui Brown who just won an award at Cosmopolitans Fun Fearless Woman Awards night for her Entrepreneur work with promoting fashion in WA.

Alyce originally from WA now resides in Melbourne. We were able to squeeze fittings and fabric shopping in between Grahams WA AFL games and events that Alyce would fly over for.

Alyce knew the style of gown she wanted which made it was easy to design. She was the most lovely and calm bride-to-be so working with her was a real pleasure. I feel very honoured and privileged to have been asked to design her gown, as many big name WA Designers had asked her.

It was one of the nicest Weddings that I have been to. Mya the flower girl stole the show as she entered the chapel waving and smiling at everyone. She wore a Beq Design miniature gown. Alyce looked stunning, her two uncles escorted her down the isle in front of around 150 friends and family. The Priest set a lovely mood and brought such grace and warmth to the ceremony.

The West Australian and Beq Design

After a year and a half of fabric shopping and fittings, the big day finally arrived. Alyce married her sweetheart, Graham Polak. Alyce wore a Beq Design gown. It was featured in The West Australian. The article was by Jayne Rickard. To view full article and image source click here!

There were more than a few tears when popular WA-born footballer Graham Polak married his long-time sweetheart Alyce Oksuz in Perth's southern suburbs this afternoon.

On what was the couple's seventh anniversary, Polak and Oksuz exchanged heartfelt vows in front of more than 100 family members, friends and members of WA's football community at St Benedict's Church in Ardross.

Polak was lucky to survive when left with severe brain damage and placed in a coma after being hit by a tram in Melbourne more than two years ago. He managed to return to AFL ranks this year before finally retiring in August.

Speaking ahead of her big day, Oksuz said she had surprisingly few nerves and was hoping for good weather.

"I thought I was going to be a lot more anxious and nervous but it's all running smoothly, so hopefully it continues and the weather holds up," Oksuz said.

Her stunning wedding gown was more than a year in the making and she praised Perth designers Rebecca Timson and Sam Elmslie from Beq Design for their efforts.

The pair will head to Bali on Sunday for a 14-night honeymoon and will be joined by family members and friends for the first seven nights to continue celebrations.

ANTHONY DECEGLIE from The Sunday Times wrote an article about Alyce and Graham. Alyce will be wearing a Beq Design Wedding Gown on her special day this Friday.

Here is a sneak peak of the article-
It has been a remarkable recovery from the hospital bed to the wedding aisle for former AFL star Graham Polak.

WA-born Polak will marry his long-time girlfriend, model Alyce Oksuz, on Friday at St Benedict's church in Ardross.
The former Richmond and Fremantle player suffered severe brain damage when he was struck by a tram while crossing a Melbourne street on June 28 in 2008. He was placed in an induced coma and doctors feared he would not survive. To read the full article, click here!

She is on her way to become the first Indigenous Australian Supermodel after signing with an American modelling agency.

A Touch of Wool III at Perth Fashion Festival 2010 was so well organised. I really can't get over how smoothly everything went.
Things were so calm backstage before the show. When I arrived the dressers were standing by their stations taking instruction from the designers, the models were sitting around eating and chatting, hair and makeup was finished and had already cleaned up, packed up and gone. The mood was great. No stress, no mess and we were able to just enjoy the show. What a fabulous event to be involved in!!!!

The Catalogue Photo Shoot!!!

I was so pleased that my fav WA Photographer - Scott G Trenorden was the photographer for this photo shoot. His work is incredible and he is a really great guy to work with. To see more of his work click HERE!

The farmthat the photo shoot was located, 'Umbledah' owned by one of the WA Superfine Wool Growers David and Rosalind, is home to some of the Merinos' that supplied the softest most delicious fabric that we were supplied with. It was a fabulous product. Accompanying this fabric and yarn is some contemporary knitwear that I designed and created using 100% wool.

A Touch of Wool III hits the Catwalk!

Well, it's finally here - Perth Fashion Festival 2010 has arrived!!!!
Today, back stage was so calm. There was no stress, no rushing around, no chaos. The event was so well organised, all I had to do was show up. There were a ton of dresser's, hair and makeup were finished and gone before I had arrived. Everyone was really relaxed and it continued like that until the end of the show. A big credit goes out to the organisers. It was a fantastic show to be part of!!!!

The Photo Shoot!!!

On Saturday we had the photo shoot for the 'A Touch of Wool III' (Click here for more details about the show).

It was one of those magical days. Everything just fell into place. The location was magnificent. The property was about 45 mins out of Perth and it belonged to one of the farmers from the WA Superfine Wool Growers group. Not only did this couple open their home and property to us but it was their sheep who supplied some of the wool that went into these garments. They were the most gracious hosts. They squeezed juice (from their own orchard I might add), they handed out cookies and they made each and every one of us feel welcome and at home. And there were quite a few of us- 8 designers, 1 photographer and his two assistants, 2 MUAs, 2 hair stylist (plus the cutest 8 week old you've ever seen), and one support crew. So there were 16 of us invading the property from sun up, til sun down. We took over the entire bottom floor.

It has been raining all week here in Perth so we were lucky that the rain held out and allowed us to have perfect weather. I think most of the credit goes to one of the organisers who had been doing a sun dance all week.
The rams were as handsome as rams can get. They were really calm and placid. I just had to have my designs photographed amongst them. Below is an image of some of the rams from the property. I hope he wasn't laughing at my designs.

During the day one of the local farmers from 'Casalana' came and showed us some of her designs. She produced and created all her designs using superfine wool from her property. She has some lovely textiles that she had woven with silk and wool. All dyed by her. She gave me some of her amazing wool. Some of the fleece was in the natural colours and the other was dyed some beautiful shades that went perfectly with my designs. I am going to make something special out of it for the show to show my gratitude.

You will have to agree that this is one of the best, if not THE best fashion shows to be involved in.

It just keeps getting better and better. WA has really pulled out all the stops this year!!!

The Dyeing Process!!!

I ordered a few dyes from KraftKolour (click here to view website). The dyes from KraftKolour were easy to use and produced the most brilliant, vibrant colours. I bought 50g bottles of dye. They were $9.36ea and should dye approximately 2kg of fabric.

I picked up this fabulous 19lt pot from Big W, for only $19.97. It is perfect for a dye bath.

How to - Dye Wool Fibres (fabric, yarn, fleece etc) using Acid Milling Dyes

Formulas for dyeing can fluctuate depending on the depth of colour you desire and the thickness, weight and type of material you use. Some formulas can also be very confusing. It is always wise to do a few sample pieces first. Always use caution and safety gear. It is advised that you use instructions from your supplier and then vary.

This is the instructions on how I dyed a hand knitted neck piece with Acid Milling Dye - it will be worn as part of my collection for Perth Fashion Festival.

What you will need - a big pot, a stirring spoon, acid milling dye (in the colour of your choice), household vinegar, salt, water and a stove or hotplate (plus any safety gear- gloves, mask etc).

1. Wet your material thoroughly.

2. Place 1lt of water in large pot on low heat. (use enough water so that your material is completely immersed)

3. Add Dye (I used about two teaspoons mixed in about 100ml of water) and pre-wetted material.

4. Stir continuously.

5. Gradually heat (this may take around 20mins). Make sure you only simmer, don't boil.

6. Remove fabric from dye bath.

7. Add vinegar (50ml dissolved in 100mls water) and stir

[It is important to note - that you always add acid to water and never water to acid, otherwise a violent reaction may occur.]

8. Add salt (I use about 2-4 tablespoons dissolved in 100mls water) and stir

9. Replace material and continue to stir.

10. Simmer until dye bath is exhausted. (you will know when it is exhausted because the water will be clear)

11. Rinse well and dry.

And you are done!!! Yay.

So I don't give too much away, you will have to wait for the fashion show for pictures of the final outcome... sorry!!!

Change in Pattern!!!

The garment that I designed for the Perth Fashion Festival- 'A Touch of Wool III' Fashion show, that was being knitted via the Shima Seiki Knit Machine..... did not work. (I blogged about it a few posts back- click here)

For some reason the knit pattern just didn't like my design. So instead of completely changing my design, I opted for a new knit pattern. And here is a quick pic of a sample piece.

This one worked beautifully.

Sooyung Yangs Studio - A Touch of Wool III

As part of the 'A Touch of Wool III' fashion show, not only were the designers supplied with 10 metres of the the most divine WA Superfine wool, but we also get to work with Sooyung Yang and get some of our designs knitted via the amazing knitting machine housed at the Department of Agriculture and Food WA.

I went yesterday to chat with Sooyung about my designs and also to choose a type of knit for the garments. I was like a kid in a candy store. I love visiting Sooyungs studio. She is meticulous in her work. She is such a hard worker and an amazing person. It was a fabulous visit and I can't wait to go back.

Ok, so here is a sneak preview- The image below is a sample of the type of knit I chose for one of my garments. There are hundreds of fabulous and detailed designs.

I chose to go simple in texture, for depth in design.

Sooyung will now make a toile (mock garment) to check the design, knit type and sizing is correct, etc. After that on to the dyeing process.

Statement Jewellery Tutorial

I have had a few request for the tutorial for the statement jewellery tutorial that I did for 'Miss Crafty Pants' blog. So I thought I would share it with you on Beq Design.

Here are some of my designs from a runway show in December 2009. The tutorial is for the necklace in the first and second images.

Tutorial

French Knitted Wire Necklace: This is the easiest piece of jewellery you will ever make. I guarantee it.

All you need is:

Wire of your choice (I used Designer Wire 20 gauge Gold 2x 10m bags)
French knitting Kit also known as spool knitting or corking (you can usually pick this up from your local craft supplier or knitting and yarn shops)
and a jewellery clasp (I used a magnetic three prong gold, I picked up from a bead supplier).

How to:

1. If you know how to french knit all you have to do is french knit the wire to the length you desire (If you're unsure of the length, drape a piece of string around your neck and use that as your guide). Cast on and off the same as you would yarn. If you don't know how to french knit check out this youtube video to see how, keeping in mind you will be using wire instead of yarn. If your wire is too think you will need to use pliers instead of a hook.

2. Squeeze each (finished) end in on itself so it is easy to add the jewellery clasp.

3. Sew on the clasp using wire (you may need to get some thinner wire if your wire is too thick for the clasp loops).

Your necklace is ready to wear!!! You can add or vary depending on what you want. I used this necklace at my last runway show. I added a bunch of thinner french knitted wire to the front of the necklace for more volume.

The Superfine Wool Has Arrived!!!

To my delight I received the email that the Superfine Wool had arrived from being processed in Italy.

When it was claimed that this wool was 'as soft as cashmere' they were not kidding.Walking into the Garment Lab to collect my share of the wool this week, I was like a giddy little school girl. I am sure they all think I am nuts in there. As a confessed fabri-holic this is like heaven for me. I was given 10 glorious meters of fabric. The wool is incredible. The draping qualities are divine. Excited would be an understatement.

I am constantly mindful and grateful to the WA Farmers and their families, who have given us this wool and for Anne Farren and the WA Department for Agriculture and Food and other sponsors for making this possible.

The next steps are to finalise the colour pallet, dye the fabric and turn this incredible 'Superfine Wool', into 5 garments fit for the runway at Perth Fashion Festival. And all before September 9th!!! Yikes! I'd better get to it!

Knit One, Pearl One

I knitted this head piece back in 2008. Initially, it was a belt but was styled as a headband for this photo shoot by one of my fav designers Sooyung Yang.

The cream knitting is made via the Shima Seiki (knitting machine) housed at the WA Department of Agriculture and Food. Sooyung Yang is the specialised programmer for the machine. It knits whole garments for a seamless finish. AMAZING!!!

A Touch of Wool III

Since my last post, I have been invited to showcase a collection at 'A Touch of Wool III' fashion show.

I am so thrilled to have been considered and am so grateful for this opportunity. As you know, this year I am focusing on wool, so this is such a fantastic honour. In past years designers such as: Aurelio Costarella, Rebecca Patterson, Megan Salmon and Sooyung Yang to name a few have shown at this event.

The show will be held at Perth Fashion Festival, Fashion Central, Forrest Chase, Western Australia.

The entry is free!

‘A touch of wool’ has grown from the Design for Comfort collaborative research project between The Department of Agriculture and Food WA and Curtin University. It focuses on innovative science and design technology within the area of WA wool fibre research.

The most exciting part of this event is that a farming group called the West Australian Superfine Woolgrowers Association (WASWA) have put together some very fine quality wool for the designers of this show to use! This wool is unique, rare and therefore expensive. It is as fine as cashmere.This wool is usually seen in high quality fashion garments. These farmers (WASWA) have been so generous! They have put money, time and effort into allowing us to use their product for this show. I feel so lucky to have been given this opportunity. I can hardly wrap my brain around it!

The wool from these farmers have been sent to Italy to be processed. We even get to work along side Sooyung Yang again using the amazing Shima Seiki (digital knitting machine).

And now my work begins. I have a few ideas already but really need to knuckle down and get designing. Some of these farmers will be at the show so I hope to do them proud. Along with other sponsors of the show like the Department of Agriculture and Food and Curtin and to the produces and directors of the show who invited me to take part in this fabulous event.

I have been off the blogger radar recently. Sorry!

I have been working on a number of projects that have occupied any free time.

So please bear with me over the next few months.

A number of the garments that I am working on are made from Fleece aka Wool. On one of the garments, I am attempting to create a new form of woollen textile and the other is my traditional use of tubular knitting.... love it!!!!

Recently, I took my daughter to Caversham WP (image above) to watch sheep shearing.

I love the process of where and how our woollen materials have come from. I think it is fascinating.

Mostly though, I love that wool is a sustainable and eco friendly material.

From the sheeps back to mine! It's hard to imagine designer clothes like that.

Last month I had the priviledge of being a guest blogger on Erikas site 'Miss Crafty Pants'. I did the layout in my normal format which didn't work too well on her site (Note to self - check layout before sending it next time) So this is what the layout was meant to look like-

Statement jewellery is a great way of sprucing up an outfit. It adds drama and enhances the overall look. Like most catwalk designs you can't always wear them as everyday pieces. However, with a bit of tweaking you can change them into trendy easy to wear accessories.

Life at Curtin

At high school there was a sign in the gym that read -
'If you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life!'
And because I was in the gym so much, I saw it a lot. And it really resonated with me.

I worked in the sports industry for a time and I really loved it. But I wanted to broaden my skills and seek new opportunities to discover new talents. So I enrolled in Fashion! And I haven't looked back.

Fashion school has had its mix of extreme highs and lows. In an industry where everything is subjective (as I like to put it) it is an amazing ride.
The course is quite demanding and extremely daunting. However, I have been so grateful to be in a course that allows you to branch out into the art and design world as part of the curriculum. I have found it so beneficial to my design qualities.

As a mature aged student, it has not been an easy ride. Trying to juggle family, home and school can be quite tricky. But it has been a wonderful journey. My Fashion coordinator and my lecturers have been so supportive along the way. My coordinator especially has been so supportive and extremely patient with my situation. In my second year of University I was pregnant with our first child. And since then it has been a rocky ride. I have done all my school work in the wee-hours of the morning and night so I don't compromise precious time with my child. I don't know any school who would allow a student to bring a 2 year old to meetings, just so she can be involved. I am really grateful for this.

School has opened doors to new experiences. It has allowed me to showcase my designs on a national level. It has broaden my knowledge on the industry as well as introducing me to some really fabulous people.

But best of all, for a few hours each week I get to be with people who have similar interests, common goals and be around people who inspire me with their incredible talent. And that is why I love Fashion at Curtin.

The Big Gold Dress

I have never felt like I have finished this gown properly. So it hangs in my sewing room until I get the inspiration and motivation to give it the life it deserves. I liked it better during the toiling stage. See images below. Its not finished in these images with raw edging on the bodice, but I think I like the tighter bodice with the full skirt and beaded waistband instead of how I did it for the photo shoot and fashion show.

Here is the gown at the Home Ground Fashion Show. I made the hoop from stiff garden piping. This way it gave it more organic movement, so it changes shapes as she walks and isn't just a regular stiff hoop.

The Beaded Gold Dress

This dress was initially designed and made for my collection for the NRA Australian Design Awards. It was one of three dresses for this event. This gown has since been in the Vampire Photo Shoot and in the 'Home Ground' fashion show.

I almost died when I saw my design on the catwalk. The gown had been sent from Perth to the Gold Coast (by their staff via post). When I saw it on the runway it looked like it had come straight out of the box. The sash wasn't tied properly and it was all creased. This event was on National TV so I was really upset with the way it was showcased. Devastated would be an understatement.

I was so grateful to have been accepted to be part of the Vampire photo shoot. At this shoot is where I met Photographer Scott G Trenorden, MUA Elsie Tan and Model Rachael Anne Cross. Here is an image from that shoot.

This gown has $400 worth of beading on it. The beads are a mixture of crystals, pearls and other beads. The material is a soft gold satin on the bodice and, netting and organza to make up the skirt.
The bodice is a princes cut front and deep v back. The skirt is made up of about 15m of material (pattern is complete circles).

I changed the dress a little for the Home Ground fashion show by adding a hoop (piping in the hem) plus adding some body and shape to the skirt. Luckily, I had full control over the way it was showcased at this event so..... here is how it was intended to look.

Araluen Botanic Park

This time of year is so gorgeous with the changing leaves and the slight chill in the air!!!
In my adventures to discover more about this beautiful place I live, I came across Araluen Botanic Park, Western Australia. It's caption is 'Paradise Found'. It said it all!!!

It was a feast for the senses. The smells were delicious. Every turn you took was a new smorgasbord of colours. I tried to soak up a much of it as I could. The whole experience was divine.

I will definitely be using this place for a fashion shoot soon.

The $10 Dress!!!

Last year I did a little experiment with what I wore to Fashion Events... Would anyone notice or even care if I wore the same dress more than once??? (The cardinal fashion sin). Can you create a couture dress on a shoe string budget??? With the economic situation last year, it was perfect timing to do an experiment such as this.

I attended quite a few fashion events last year but there were 3 fashion shows that showcased some of my own designs. At these events I was either going to be on the red carpet or walk on the catwalk with my collection. Perfect!!!

I made a $10 dress out of a simple stretch material. It is a princess cut design, 3/4 sleeved with a long zip up the back. Modestly simple and simply modest. Just my style!!!! It took me a good 10-20 mins to make.
I wore this dress to all three fashion shows. Would anyone notice?!?!?! Can you fit into the fashion world wearing a $10 dress???

The result was - no one noticed, no one cared.... and until now.... no one would have known.... I didn't feel out of place. I felt professionally and appropriately dressed. I think it was a fun experiment. And I think you can fit into the fashion world with whatever style and budget you want.

This year I hope to make some fun dresses for fashion event this year. Stay tuned!!!

Millinery

In the past 12 months I tried my hand at head wear designs. I really enjoyed it and hope to do more for some runway shows this year.

This first head piece was quite light for it's size. I used plastic fencing as the structure. This material was strong enough to hold its form plus all the additions. It is made up of french knitted tubes, hand felt, and various other wool materials and a touch of netting for extra texture.

The next head piece was constructed using bought felt (double layered for stiffness and strength) and patterned to make the right shape and sewn together. The outer layer is simply two feather boa's stitched on with an additional feather in the front to create more drama and add colour.

For this piece I wanted to have a top hat with a bit of a difference. It too like the last hat was made from double thick bought felt to create the shape and form. The additional decoration is fleece straight from the sheep's back. I bought it from a company called Bilby Yarns who was one of the sponsors for the Home Ground Fashion Show. I also hand knitted a band in chocolate brown to accentuate the fleece.

Last but certainly not least my favourite of all the hats I have made. It is a gold wire french knitted top hat.

It took quite some time to make but I loved the result. Model Kelly Holmes really rocked it on the catwalk and I was so pleased with the outcome.

The Purple Gown!!!

This gown was really fun and easy to make. A good friend donated this beautiful heavy satin to me (as a bit of a fabri-holic, beautiful material is the best gift anyone could give me). The colour is like a deep plum. The skirt is a complete circle (so just cut two complete semi-circles and sew together) with the front of the skirt clipped up (using a jewellery attachment/hook) to create pleats and shape. The bodice is draped into a halter neck wrapped around the body and a zip in the side. The bodice has small pleats and tucks to create body, shape and character.

I made this gown for the same photo shoot as the silver and blue gowns. I don't pattern make when it comes ot one-off pieces, like gowns. I just see the shape in my mind and cut the fabric, sew it together. Draping and visualisation is the techniques I use! I think the greatest skill I learnt from Fashion School was to be brave. I think fear of making mistakes held me back from being more creative with my designs. Although, I continue to pattern make for tailored garments but as for gowns I like the fabric to speak and just cut.

This gown was also worn at the 'Home ground Fashion Show' last December. It has been in two photo shoots with Scott G Trenorden. One on the trip out in the wheatbelt of Western Australia and the other for my 18th Century photo shoot titled 'Disrupted'.

The Blue Gown!!!

I designed and made this Blue Gown specifically for the photoshoot with photographer Scott G Trenorden and MUA Elsie Tan (in the wheatbelt of Western Australia). To read more about the photo shoot click here.

The scenery was spectacular. And the sky was magical as it played the perfect game of matching the outfits. One thing that did stay constant was that IT WAS FREEZING!!! Our models Rachael Anne Cross and Alanna O (modelling the blue gown and also the silver gown showcased in a different post) were such great sports.

This gown is made from blue satin and organza. It has a beaded lace belt and a 3 meter train. I love the contrasting colours of the blue material and the green wheat with the touch of red on Alanna's lips...

Red Bull Air Race - Perth

This weekend Perth, Western Australia, is playing host to the Red Bull Air Race. I love this event. The sounds, smell and atmosphere is amazing.

Perth has (in my humble opinion) some of the best parks in Australia. Kings Park which is located just a few minutes from Perth City centre, is an incredible place to go. It has spectacular views across the Swan River and the city, beautiful gardens and it is just a fun place for the whole family.

Yesterday, we took a trip to Kings Park and checked out some of the practice runs for the Red Bull Air Race. To read more about the race in Perth click HERE!

One of my favourite West Aussie Designers is..... Isobel Macaulay from pinchandspoon.

I first saw her designs at the launch for FASHIONWA.COM. Stylist Chelsey Wayte was wearing a stunning dress by Isobel. Another lady was wearing a scalf/neck piece aswell. This lady stood out in the croud and I just had to ask who she was wearing. Her reply "Isobel Macaulay, and she is just over there......." I was busting at the seams to meet her. Unfortunely, I didn't get to chat with her that night but have talked to her via email since. I really believe to give credit where credit is due. Her designs are just spectacular.

I would describe her collection as Antique Chic. Her combination of materials is superb. I love her elegant composition of raw edges, sequin, precious jewels and lace. AMAZING!!!!

The Great South West

Have you ever visited Western Australia???? Or even Australia for that matter?????

On my adventures to explore this beautiful state/country, I have found incredible landscapes and the most spectacular scenery imaginable. Driving along the roads here is breath taking. The landscape changes at every turn, making the journey a true adventure.

If you haven't been to the south west coast of Western Australia, here are some of my images and hopefully they will entice you to come and experience it for yourself.... simply stunning!!!!

The Silver Gown

Last year photographer Scott G Trenorden invited a few of us to join him on a photo shoot in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia. We all drove for hours to a remote country property. It was an incredible photo shoot over a few days. Makeup Artist Elsie Tan and I (designer and stylist) along with a team of models, photographer's assistant/lighting, hair stylists, family and friends, joined Scott on this photo shoot. Behind the old farm house was this amazing tree. It created the perfect backdrop for the Silver Gown.

I made this gown specifically for this photo shoot. It is made from satin and it was a lovely gown to make. It designed itself really. I just sewed it together where it was calling out for me to do so.

Not having met or fitted Alanna O (model) previously I gave out a huge *sigh when the gown fit perfectly. It took me about 3 hours to make this gown from woe to go. I didn't make a pattern, instead used a drapping technique to allow the fabric to talk to me (that sounds weird but trust me fabric talks). When I am styling one of my gowns in a shoot I like to have my camera with me so I can see what the frame, angles etc look like, to make sure everything is perfect for that shot. Scott is so easy to work with so it makes the process a really fabulous experience.

So much goes into a photo shoot. I have a new found respect for photographers and the processes taken to get the perfect image (the position of the lighting, the angles of the model, the elements. In this case the wind played a huge factor in this photo). It was really cold and really really windy. So the model had to stand facing the wind so that the train would float gracefully.

The hair and makeup in itself is an amazing adventure. Elsie is always happy and hardworking. She is so fun to work with, she always makes me laugh. Having people like her around makes these kind of photo shoots such a great experience.

I love this image of Elsie running out of shot. Hilaaaarrrrrious!!!! She is so much fun...

The entire photo shoot was great. Great company, great location = great photos....

Knitted Furniture

Jen Ramos (a fellow Blogger) from Made By Girl recently had a post about designer Melanie Porter. Immediately, I was drawn in. How incredible are these designs!!!! I can not even begin to imagine how long and how hard it would be to knit and then to fit the furniture. Aaaa-maaaaz-inggggg!!!

Sandra Backlund

In the past few years I have really discovered the love for knitting. During my second year of Fashion School I came across Sandra Backlund 's designs. They are incredible and I fell in love.
Her work is amazing. It just astounds me what this woman can do with a piece of yarn. Her work is truly inspirational. It gives knitting new dimension and explores new ways to wear knitted garments.

Sculptures by the Sea

Every year our local beach holds an exhibition called Sculptures by the Sea, showcasing around 60 local, national and international artists. It is truly Aaaaam-aaaaaaz-ing!!!!

For my Art class this year I am focusing on sculptures made from junk... or turning trash into treasure. Which is a real passion of mine. My aim is to not spend one cent on materials. Wish me luck!!!
I have one of those teachers who truly inspires. Just the way she speaks about art/design makes you sit a little taller, lean a little closer, just to hear what she has to say. She gets you excited about art and makes you want to do the best you possibly can. I was so thrilled to hear that she was my lecturer this year. I had her in 2006 and just loved her class. Yay!!! I am so excited for this year....

My teacher told me about this particular sculpture by Kerrie Argent titled 'evidence - the trail continues'. So I went to my local beach check it out. And it did not disappoint. Wow.... The shear size, just in itself was impressive...

Back to Knitting!!!

I love knitting. So this year I am going to do my entire collection completely hand knitted. Call me crazy!! Its going to take a long time but I love it... Last year I got the knitting bug. I put two knitted pieces in last years collection (I made a few other knitted accessories but only two garments). This year I am going to go more elaborate and sculpted.

The Story Behind My Wedding Dress!!!

Trying to find a wedding gown with sleeves can be hard at the best of times. But on the sunny Gold Coast it was virtually impossible. I had searched and searched and searched for a gown. I didn't want anything too fancy. Just simple elegance.

I was getting married in Melbourne, in the winter, so it was going to be cold, and I wanted long sleeves. There is just no such thing as a long sleeved wedding dress.

During my adventures I went into a bridal shop. The attendant looked me up and down and said "Yes". I asked if he had any gowns with sleeves. His reply to me was "farm girls buy their wedding dresses from down the road". He proceded to give me a quick address and turned abruptly and walked away.

I wasn't quite insulted until I got to the shop he had directed me to an Op shop (or a thrift shop to all my US friends). How rude....

And pretty much to cut a long story short, that is how I got into fashion. I ended up designing my own Wedding gown and then had it made.

After that I quickly enrolled myself into a sewing course and thats where my fashion journey began. 6 years later and now I am making the wedding dress for an Australian Football Players fiance. Wow, I feel like I have come full circle.

I love the part in the movie Pretty Woman, where Julia Roberts as Vivian says-

Shop assistant: “Hello, can I help you?”

Vivian: “I was in here yesterday, you wouldn’t wait on me.”

Shop assistant: “Oh.”

Vivian: “You people work on commission, right?”

Shop assistant: “Yeah.”

Vivian: “Big mistake. Big. Huge. I have to go shopping now.”

I want to go and do that to the shop assistant that wouldn't wait on me... Although, inadvertently it was the best thing to happen to me....So maybe I should go Thank him!!!!

Speleothems

A little while ago I had hit a creative wall... nothing was working as it should and I felt completely uninspired. I had an exhibition (for a studio review) pending and I felt completely overwhelmed.

My little family took a little holiday and went caving. The speleothems were incredible. I felt the wall lift and the creative juices flowed in again. Then everything fell into place organically as it should.

Here are some shots from our adventure.

The caves were spectacular. And to think how long the process that each single formation takes is incredible. Totally fascinating.

I called my work Speleothem which is greek for 'cave deposite'. Or in otherwords cave formations. Stalactites, Stalagmites, Soda straws, Helictites, Collumns etc.

Fashion Exposed

I have recently returned back from a fabulous Fashion event in Sydney called Fashion Exposed. It is a large industry based event. I was lucky enough to win a spot in the Avant Garde Gallery.

Before I left for Sydney, there was some media attention. Only from local papers but exposure is good in whatever form it comes. So I was grateful.

Can I mention that I am so impressed with this model Rachael Cross. I have worked with her on a number of shoots. And what I love about her is that she looks so different in every shoot. She doesn't need coaching and she is just a great model. For instance- I got the call from a newspaper that the photographer would be at my house the following day. I thought wow thats really short notice to get a model. So I just emailled Rach to see if she was interested. I honestly thought it was a long shot to get a model at such short notice. But within 5 mins of sending the email. Rach called me back and asked "what time? and do you want my hair and makeup done?" wow... she arrived early with hair and makeup done. Her mum Tracie came along too and helped with the lighting... Such a great resource. I am sooooo impressed...

I was at Fashion Exposed when the article came out. Rachael got me a few copies and posted them to me. We both had a bit of a laugh about which photo they chose. We took dozens of photos so don't ask me why!!!

In this photo we were being cheesey and having a bit of fun whilst the photographer was getting the lighting right. Note to self... dont do that again :)

Oh how embarrassing!!!

Home Ground Fashion Show

There were 21 of us showcasing our designs, it cost almost $50K to hold this event (monies were fundraised, individually contributed and sponsorships). And thats pretty cheap for a fashion event of this size. We had around 800-1000 in attendance. We were lucky to have Aly May be the caller backstage. She really knows how to run a smooth and beautiful show.

The models in my garments are: Jessica Maloney, Aimee Burrows, Kelly Holmes and Tom Bull (all from Scene Model Management), plus my two models in the two big gold gowns Stephi Mclean and Rachael Anne Cross. It was a fabulous night!!!!

Perth Fashion Festival

Perth Fashion Festival was a really fun event this year. I went to quite a few shows and was fortunate to be in one too. I had one garment in the Mens Ready-to-wear category. It wasn't my first pick of categories but it was fun to shake things up a little and make something else rather than gowns.

I made a hand knitted vest, mola worked cotton jersey top and recycled blazers converted into shorts. Keeping it Green!!!!!
